The climate of this region is generally mild as the sea has a moderating effect protecting the islands from extreme temperatures. Winds are predominantly westerly and can blow unabated for several days during late winter and spring, with cooling sea breezes during the summer months.
Hunting and gathering is a way of life here on Flinders and the traditions have been handed down through the generations of Straitsmen. For some locals on the Island there are only fours seasons – wild duck, mutton bird, brown quail and southern rock lobster (crayfish). Fishing occurs all year round so call in to Service Tasmania to purchase a license to catch and enjoy a taste of what Flinders Island has to offer. Wild duck season begins on the March long weekend and closes on the first weekend in June. Mutton bird amateur season opens the last weekend in March and continues for two more weekends. Brown quail season begins the first weekend in May and closes the first weekend in June. Southern rock lobster season begins on the long weekend in November and closes in September.
Killiecrankie Enterprises and Flinders Island Fresh sell cooked or live crayfish during most of the season. In order for the crayfish to be as fresh as possible please order in advance – at least a day before it is required.
