Camerons inlet

Sellars Lagoon and Camerons Inlet (above) ...

Looking across towards Babel Island from Walkers Lookout you can make out the northern most of the three lagoons that cut such a swathe up the east coast of Flinders Island.

We now know this waterway as Sellars Lagoon, although the 1832 map of the island originally had it pegged as commemorating a Mr Burnett. At least Camerons Inlet has kept its name through to the present day.

Today a trip to Camerons Inlet lets you walk out onto the ocean beach and stroll up past Sellars lagoon towards Babel Island.

These lagoons are valued and protected for providing vital habitat for both domestic and migratory waterbirds. They are internationally recognised are recognised as being Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBAs). This listing is only is achieved through the application of quantitative ornithological criteria, grounded in up-to-date knowledge of the sizes and trends of bird populations. The criteria ensure that the sites selected as IBAs have true significance for the international conservation of bird populations.
