One of the best ways to appreciate in the dramatic east coast of Flinders Island at a glance is to travel up to the Furneaux Lookout at Memana.
The lookout is named after Tobias Furneaux – the commander of the HMS Adventure – the first vessel to sail up the full extent of the Tasmanian east coast in April 1773.
The HMS Adventure was the support ship accompanying James Cook on board HMS Resolution. In July 1772 they had set out from England to sail as far south as possible in order to determine if there was any great southern landmass.
After becoming the first ships to across the Antarctic Circle, the vessels lost contact. Furneaux accordingly set off independently with a view to meeting up again with Cook as planned in New Zealand. In doing this he sailed past the group of islands here that Cook later named as Furneaux's Isles.
